Chinese New Year
The Chinese New Year is the most important and the happiest holiday for Chinese and other Asian people. The Chinese New year is always between late January and mid February. In this holiday, families and friends always get together to say good bye to the old year and welcome the new. In the past, there were three weeks of celebrations but today it lasts one week.
During this holiday the Chinese have many traditional activities. They clean their houses, pay off debts, buy new clothes, paint their house and windows and get a new haircut. The Chinese families come together for a celebration dinner. This custom is called "surrounding the hearth". Both children and adults eat together. There must be different dishes on the New Year's Eve dinner, such as, chicken, fish, clams, New Year cakes and carrots.
Other interesting things about the Chinese New Year are Red Packet, Red Couplets, The Lion Dance and fireworks. For example, The Lion Dance is the greatest event for the celebration. Some people dress up the lion clothes and dance in the streets. They bring good luck to the houses or businesses when the lion dance visits. The Chinese New Year is the biggest holiday for the Chinese.
